My new years resolution this year was to get a road bike and use it. In the UK I owned a good mountain bicycle, and I used it, but often found myself more on the roads than off. When I arrived in Australia I thought buying a hybrid would bridge the gap and afford me the chance to ride both on and off track. In reality it was just half as good on and off track, and not good at anything.

So I went and mail ordered a Wiggle bike. My first ever Carbon road bike with 20 gears. Technically much less usable, but still I love it. I told my friends and colleagues that I would simply enjoy the bicycle and not get obsessed with all the cleats and lycra and what not.

Six months later I fully embraced the monster. I’ve got a wardrobe full of lycra, snazzy cleats, lights, computer, a Strava account and now I talk the talk and walk the walk too.

A group of us from work and outside found each other and created Murdoch Madness.

We go cycling on a fairly regular basis as a group and it all works! Though there's a clear lull during the winter season.

On 5th June I met up with colleagues Louise and Karl and we set off on a 50km journey (add on a few km’s for getting lost and doubling back of course).

We met at Murdoch and travelled up the Freeway Cycle Path, hooked a left as we hit the city and headed west until North Fremantle. East towards the Left Bank Pub where the plan was to have lunch. Except, we didn’t have locks and they wouldn’t allow our bicycles in. Onto Dome down the road…

So eventually we stopped at Zephyr Cafe, and I think karma must have been rewarding us for being shunned from the last two venues, because the seafood platter we had here was superb! Look at the size of those scallops!

After lunch, we dragged the extra weight we’d gained and headed east along the foreshore. Can’t beat some of the cycle paths that line the shore!

It was such a good ride, I tweaked the route that evening and did it all over again the next day!
