The trip to Kununurra was my most anticipated. Earlier in the year I'd considered a move there but didn't get the job I applied for. This trip for me was my chance to get an idea of whether or not I was going to let that one go, or love it even more to apply again.

As was the theme, we left Halls Creek nice and early. The plan was to drive to Kununurra, skip Wyndham but then continue on the road towards the Northern Territory (NT) border and then slingshot down to Lake Argyle. In hindsight, we probably would have had time to visit Wyndham, so for next time.

The road to Kununurra was quite different to the other 2 legs of the journey. Surrounding land was more mountainous, hilly, greener, roads more undulating. A much more enjoyable drive.

As with most of the Great Northern Highway a bunch of the river crossings have been upgraded and the old one left as a relic of olden days.

We completed the 350km trip to Kununurra without any issues and kept heading east. The road to the border took an extra 30mins. At the border is the Department of Agriculture & Farming Western Australia or DAFWA, Checkpoint Charlie. I tried to find information about Alpha and Bravo, thinking that maybe the checkpoint at Eucla (at the South East border) would be aptly named but all of my searches kept taking me to the post war history of Germany.

As mandatory when visiting NT, we cranked up the speed to the 130kmph national speed limit, and then promptly returned to WA.

On our return, we had no foods to declare (the checkpoint is only monitoring inbound traffic) and then turned left onto Lake Argyle Rd. The road felt so long, but on arriving at Lake Argyle, it was well worth it. Photos best describe this place...
