Last week, partner in crime Louise and I set off on our weekend away in the South West and Margaret River region of the state for some exploring, photography and degustation.

I’ve been to the area quite a number of times and being a comfortable 2hrs drive from Perth, it’s a very popular and convenient destination.

Our first stop was to see Fergus, the wine drinking…yak? I don’t know anything about Fergus, though I’ve always considered him the welcome sign to the South West.

Lunch was at the ever consistent Goose restaurant just at the entrance to Busselton Jetty.

As it turned out though the highlight to the day was a quick detour to Surfers Point once we’d arrived in the Margaret River area. I’ve been to Surfers point lots of times, in fact its my go to place when in the area and in the past has been host to the World Surf League competitions. How many times have I driven beyond Surfers Point to the Margaret River rivermouth (do i have to declare river twice in this sentence?). Exactly once now.

Turns out if you keep driving past the Surfers Point area, past some turns (no trailers allowed), you end up at a another paved parking area with toilets. We set out to walk up the river and took some photos there.

As we returned to the car, we thought we’d take some photos of the rocks and beach itself but… Apparently it’s okay to let naked children frolic about the place, so that really put me off taking any photos.

Still, well worth popping into for some great crashing waves, and, if you’re willing to cross the sandbank, a private beach. Nearby is also another dedicated car park for Rock Pools, and in the opposite direction a lookout spot up the hill.

Our first day in Margaret River over, day two was scheduled to be a bit of Boranup Forest, Pemberton and Nannup.
