I had the opportunity to visit Kununurra for the third time this year, and luckily was introduced to Rachael of Maceys Tours. She runs a non existent tour company that makes no money but does incredibly good tours exploring Kununurra and surrounding areas. Of course I have her to thank for all of my outdoor adventures.

Mirima National Park Hike

The first hike was sold to us as the unofficial Mirima Hike. Unofficial because most would drive to the car park and walk from there, but we parked at the end of a residential street and walked straight into the bush.

Garmin Route

The first obstacle was balancing on a metal bar across a 2.5m wide stream. The rest was much easier! Rocks, pools, views, reflections and an excellent sunset. The walk was very hot and humid, a 3.5km round trip and a great introduction to more hikes in Kununurra.

Elephant Rock Hike

Elephant Rock was a little different. Located to the south of Kununurra, the start of the trail only accessible by sandy 4x4 track, we started this hike a few days later.

It started well. Even though the sky was completely grey, it made for a nice change for the usual scorching sun beating us down. Three of us climbed the 100m up to Elephant rock, simple enough!

Getting (almost) to the peak was rewarding. But our accomplishment was short lived when we saw an approaching storm coming from the south.

I remember Rachel, with no urgency in her voice saying something like “it’ll take ages to get here”. Less than a minute later we were moving back down at a rapid pace.

We managed to shelter…Sorry, I mean I found some shelter, whilst the others toughed it out. Once the wind and rain eased, we returned down the hill and called it a day. It was a good hike, shame we didn’t make it to the top.
