When I was in Kununurra, people asked me if I’d been to Secret Springs, and I hadn’t to begin with. It’s not on a map, there are some signs nearby, but what you really need is a local guide, or CEO of Macey’s Tours to show you the way.

A proper 4WD vehicle is essential, swimming gear is preferred, sun protection is mandatory, and take it with a pinch of salt when people tell you about the little fishies that like to nibble on people underwater.

Located in the Ngamoowalem Conservation Park, further north of Black Rock Falls, the base of the springs is about 9km off-road from Valentine Spring Road.

Even after the long off-roading journey there was actually some sort of car park at the end. The trail up the hill was short, but quite tricky going up the steep rocks. We didn’t know what to expect, but as we reached the pool we were aiming for and turned to look at the view, it was pretty jaw dropping.

We jumped into the pool and I can confirm, there was a fish that brushed against me and made me a bit nervous. But, I really enjoyed it (the swimming experience, not brushy fishies), plus the water was just too fresh.

We walked a little further up until we couldn’t get past the next waterfall.

…and that was pretty much it, with one last dip in the bottom part of the spring.
